Yesterday saw PlayStation’s State of Play dedicated to the upcoming Final Fantasy 16. Here’s everything new we saw during the event.
The showcase showed around 20 minutes of gameplay from the upcoming instalment in the FF franchise. With only a few months left until the game fully releases, fans now have a lot more information as to what they can expect.
The presentation was aimed at PlayStation owners and especially newcomers to the Final Fantasy world. This makes sense considering this will be Sony’s big PlayStation exclusive for the next few months. So let’s take a look at what we discovered.
More than one protagonist in Final Fantasy 16?
Up until now, trailers have only hinted at the ability to play as protagonist Clive Rosfield. However, back in November, creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro did reveal that players would get the chance to play as another character.
In the showcase, we see who that character will be – Clive’s younger brother, Joshua. Although we only see him for a small amount of time, we can also see some of his Phoenix abilities.
Options for new players
With Final Fantasy 16 going more down the action route than its predecessors, it can be a bit daunting for new players. However, the team were aware of this potential issue and have offered a helpful solution to the game’s Ability Points. For those unsure what to pick, the game can pick them for you.
Additionally, the game offers helpful tweaks to gameplay. This can be seen with certain combat attacks allowing more time to complete. Players can also change difficulty settings, including one which will put more emphasis on the story over combat.
The showcase also showed snippets of the game’s map and ability upgrade screen.
Epic Battles and Scores
The trailer wouldn’t be complete without a look at some of the epic battles you can face in Final Fantasy 16. We see the colossal Eikons such as Ifrit, Titan, Phoenix and Bahamut. Additionally, we also get to see the Moogles, of course.
Last but not least, the showcase was accompanied by the game’s main theme song. Producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that this was composed by Japanese musician Kenshi Yonezu.
