Henry Cavill is being replaced by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in season four of The Witcher on Netflix.
So, we have good news and bad news, depending on your perspective.
Firstly, the good news is that The Witcher has been renewed for season four on Netflix.
Secondly, Henry Cavill will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in the fourth season.
Hemsworth, the brother of Chris, is perhaps best known for playing Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games movies.
However, The Witcher could be his biggest role yet, as he becomes the new face of the popular Netflix adaptation. One thing is for sure however, Hemsworth certainly has big shoes to fill.
The news was announced by Netflix in a blog post, confirming that season three will be the last for Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia.
Henry Cavill says goodbye to The Witcher
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf.”
“As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” continued Cavill. “Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Liam Hemsworth says hello to The Witcher
“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” said Hemsworth. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.”
He continued: “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
It’s going to be weird seeing someone else playing Geralt of Rivia and a part of me wonders whether it would have been best having Hemsworth portray a different Witcher character.
Furthermore, it’s understandable why Cavill can’t play Geralt in The Witcher series on Netflix, after season three, given his recently announced DC commitments, confirming previous rumours.
When will season four of The Witcher be released?
It was recently announced that season three of The Witcher will arrive in the summer of 2023.
Moreover, if previous seasons are anything to go by, each season has a two-year gap in-between. So, it’s likely that season four of The Witcher won’t launch until 2025.
In related news, it was also revealed by CD Projekt Red that the original Witcher game is getting a full remake and it will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.
