CDPR has announced that the original Witcher game is getting a full remake. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5.
Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red announced that two new The Witcher games were in development. This was alongside the other Witcher game that was announced back in March 2022.
The Witcher remake had a codename
One of the games announced earlier this month had the codename “Canis Majoris”. Well, this Witcher remake was in fact, Canis Majoris. The remake was announced to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the first Witcher game released in 2007 on PC.
In collaboration with CDPR, the remake will be developed by Fool’s Theory. Found in 2015, Fool’s Theory is a team said to specialise in role-playing games. Furthermore, it’s a team made up of veteran AAA developers. Some of them even worked on The Witcher 2 as well as The Witcher 3.
“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and updating the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it is just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, Head of Studio at CDPR.
“I am very happy that my professional paths have crossed again with fellow developers from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it’s a remake of a project that is so close to our hearts,” added Jakub Rokosz, CEO, Fool’s Theory. ”We are excited to join forces with CD PROJEKT RED, and our goal is to give players another great game from the iconic Witcher series.”
Another remake?
We live in an era in which we are not short of remakes, for better or worse. However, this Witcher remake arguably makes more sense than most.
Not only was the original game released back in 2007, but it was also PC-only. Moreover, the game hasn’t aged all that well in terms of gameplay. So, not only will more fans get to appreciate the game that started it all, but it’s also going to be a game worthy of the series it came to be.
When will The Witcher remake be released?
At this time, neither CDPR nor Fool’s Theory has announced a date or window. However, as stated in the tweet above, CDPR said that it wants: “to do this right, so please be patient — it’s gonna be a while until we can share more details.”
The tweet suggests that the remake’s release is a long way off. The Witcher remake will however be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
