Here are our remaining picks for the best fighting games to play in 2022!
6. The King of Fighters XV
The King of Fighters XV isn’t here to play around: a long running series that knows its fans well, this veteran of the fighting genre might not hook a newcomer, but it’s become a firm fave for existing players. Steep learning curve aside, KOF XV has a fantastic team roster and reliable network performance, making it a great choice for playing with friends in online matches. Each character has a distinct playstyle, which sets it apart from some of the competition’s palette-swap style roster. Plus, it’s an absolute joy to play on the PS5, thanks to Unreal Engine 4.
7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
You can’t talk about the best fighting games without talking about the king of casual play. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still reigns supreme when it comes to platform fighters, allowing up to 8 players to duke it out with their favourite Nintendo characters on colourful stages with a bouncy soundtrack. There’s a truly impressive number of playable characters, and even after years it doesn’t feel old to smash Mario to bits with the Wii Sports trainer. There’s a healthy competitive fighting scene, with players still participating in tournaments based around previous series entries.
8. Soulcalibur VI
Uncover hidden truths in Soulcalibur VI, the latest (and perhaps greatest) entry in Bandai Namco’s 3D fighter series. One of the best things about the Soulcalibur games is that they’re fun for any skill level and VI holds true to that formula, with a forgiving story mode as well as plot reboot for newer fans. Create the most ridiculous custom characters with your friends for a laugh, or master the 21+ roster of fabulous fighters across the game’s excellent stages. As a bonus, Soulcalibur VI also has an abundance of single player content.
9. Guilty Gear Strive
The ultimate anime fighter, Guilty Gear Strive combines hybrid graphics with incredible animations for a fighting game that’s as stylish as it is competitive. While this entry removes a tonne of older features it’s still a Guilty Gear game at heart (we love you, Instant Kill) with familiar characters and themes joining a revitalised gameplay that’s earned its place in esports. A sharp game with excellent netcode, Guilty Gear Strive has received numerous updates and seasons since its release in 2021.
10. MultiVersus
And finally, the game everyone’s been talking about recently. MultiVersus is a crossover fighter with characters from the most dissimilar franchises you can imagine – think Arya Stark vs. Rick & Morty – setting the scene for a party game that’s here to stay. Huge on social media and with over 10 million players, MultiVersus might not be the deepest or best fighting game, but it’s definitely one to enjoy with your mates for an evening. Expect more characters to be added as the game matures in the next few months.
