Which faceplate license would you like to see?

Official PS5 Faceplates May Be Coming Sooner Than You Think

Sony has finalised a patent for PlayStation 5 faceplates. So, does this mean that official PS5 faceplates are on the way?

Since the launch of the PS5, Sony has not released its own official faceplate. The current faceplates on the PS5 are detachable, which had fans hoping that official custom plates will soon be on the way.

Rather than buying a limited-edition console, it’s an appealing prospect to be able to buy licensed faceplates inspired by some of PlayStation’s leading first-party titles.

Sony hasn’t taken kindly to some third-party sellers

Unfortunately, those official faceplates are yet to arrive and as a result, third-party independent sellers are attempting to fill that hole in the market. Sony hasn’t taken too kindly to the third-party sellers and has been known to issue cease and desist orders.

One of the most public legal disputes has been between Sony and DBrand, who challenged the giant publisher to “Try and Sue Us. Even when visiting the DBrand website, the words “Checkmate, Lawyers” can be seen in the banner. To be fair, revised PS5 plates from DBrand have been on sale for several weeks. So perhaps, there is some foundation to its challenge towards Sony?

However, as reported by Eurogamer (via OPAttack), a patent design for PlayStation 5 faceplates has been approved. The patent was approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on November 16th.

What faceplates would you like to see?

This could not only mean that Sony might be on the verge of selling its own officially licensed PS5 faceplates but licenses could also be handed out to third-party sellers to create their own. On the other hand, the patent could just be a legal blockade to stop these third party creators from selling them.

If Sony were to sell its own PS5 faceplates, which franchises would you like to see? Personally, I’d be on the lookout for something from Horizon Forbidden West, God of War, Uncharted and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
