Netflix password-sharing rules to roll out worldwide

Netflix has announced their new password-sharing rules that will roll out worldwide within the next few months. 

Netflix has been focused on their crackdown on password-sharing for their subscription service the last few months. These new rules have been trialed in a handful of countries but they are planning for them to be global in the next few months.

The scheme is currently being trialed in Latin America, Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal. In these areas, only the account holder’s ‘primary location’ is able to access the streaming service.

In order for this rule to be implemented, the account holder must log in via their home’s WiFi. Additionally, they must log-in around every 31 days or their account can be blocked. However, this can be paused if the person is travelling. 

“In Q1, we launched paid sharing in four countries and are pleased with the results. We are planning on a broad rollout, including in the US, in Q2,” reads Netflix’s Q1 2023 shareholder report.

You can still add other Users

However, there will be a small fee. Account holders can share their account with extra users for $7.99 a month per person in Canada, $7.99 in New Zealand, €3.99 in Portugal, and €5.99 in Spain. The price is yet to be confirmed for US and UK residents.

In order to stop the rioting, Netflix have introduced a cheaper service which is ad-supported. According to the aforementioned report, it is a success. 

“Given current healthy performance and trajectory of our per-member advertising economics, particularly in the US, we’re upgrading our ads experience with more streams and improved video quality to attract a broader range of consumers,” the report reads. 

With no specific date for the roll out to come to UK and US residents, we will make sure to update you.
