The latest The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition update reportedly breaks mods for those playing Legendary Edition. Bethesda released the patch to fix a black screen issue that was causing crashes.
However, it would appear that the update is now causing further issues for players with pre-existing modded saves in the Special Edition.
Released earlier this month, the Anniversary Edition celebreates ten years since Skyrim initially launched. The latest edition includes a number of changes, community created content and also fishing – woo!
The Anniversary Edition is built on the Special Edition. As such, any updates made to the base game also update the Special Edition. This automatic update allegedly breaks installed mods, the likes of which players have likely had installed for some time. The process of installing mods is not an easy one, and finding the right balance can take a lot of tweaking.
Skyrim Anniversary Edition’s 1.6.323 update, which you can learn more about here, is also causing issues with the Skyrim Script Extender. The unique mod extends the capabilities of Skyrim’s engine, allowing for mods that improve jumping, modify the camera and change the game in meaningful ways.
Players can avoid the issues caused by the update by turning off auto update within Steam settings. From here, you can continue playing Skyrim as normal by launching it through Nexus Mods Vortex Launcher, with auto update also turned off.
There’s also, ironically, a mod for those players who may have updated accidentally. The imaginatively named, Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Downgrade Patcher, will revert your Skyrim game back to 1.5.97.
