Pokemon Legends: Arceus is off to an incredibly strong start, with sales positioning it as the second best-selling Switch game in its first week in Japan.
For all the complaints about how Pokemon Legends: Arceus looks, it certainly has sold extremely well. Industry analyst David Gibson was able to provide the numbers of copies sold in the game’s first week in Japan. Legends 1,425,000 copies in its first week, which positions it as the second best-selling game in its first week in Japan. It sits behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold 1,881,000 copies. And it’s ahead of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which sold 1,396,000 copies.
Not only that, but the Nintendo of America Twitter account shared that the game has sold over 6.5 million copies globally in its first week. That’s more than both BDSP and Sword and Shield, which both respectively sold 6 million copies in their first week. Also important to note is that typically mainline Pokemon games have two versions, which boosts numbers. So the fact that Legends: Arceus achieved this as only one version is extra impressive.
It’s clear that all round the Switch is a hit for Nintendo. Just recently, the company announced that they have sold over 100 million units of the Switch. This beats out the Nintendo Wii in lifetime sales. And if the Switch sticks around for a few more years to come, it could even outsell the PS2, the best selling console of all time.
