We’re coming up to Big Games Season™ which usually means a lot of big, bombastic, explosive video game titles releasing back to back. I’m looking at you, Call of Duty/Battlefield/Halo.
However, with the longer nights drawing in and temperatures already starting to plummet, the urge to get cosy with something more wholesome has never been stronger. One of the GameByte team’s favourite cosy games of last year was ‘Coffee Talk’.
It’s a super chill game from the team at Toge Productions that sees you run your own late night coffee shop in downtown Seattle. There, you get to listen in to the many wonderful conversations between your patrons, all while serving them artisanal drinks.
Coffee Talk was a huge hit last year, garnering ‘Very Positive’ review status on Steam. Now, fans can look forward to even more quirky conversations with the upcoming sequel. Called ‘Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly’, it follows on from the events in the first game. Some of your favourite characters make a return, though there’s plenty of new faces to get to know, too.
cosy vibes
The sequel isn’t out until early next year, but I was able to get my hands on the first half an hour of Coffee Talk Episode 2 at EGX earlier this month. After a morning of relatively stressful interviews, I can’t tell you how much of a relief it was to dive into this alternate reality rendition of Seattle. Even with all the hustle and bustle of a gaming convention around me, I found myself instantly calmed by the lo-fi soundtrack.
Part of what makes Coffee Talk so interesting is its diverse cast. Characters are a smooth blend of fantastical characters, with Succubi, Elves, and Banshees all rocking up for a cup of joe. It’s bizarre, but they make this word infinitely more interesting to hear about. And all you have to do is sit there and listen, occasionally stoking the conversation with a new batch of brew.
If you were a fan of the first game, then Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly should be high up on your priority list when it launches next year. If it can calm me down at the height of a gaming convention, then it’s sure as hell going to fit right in as a cosy winter game.
You can wishlist Coffee Talk Episode 2 on Steam right now. The first game is available to play on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
