The Call of Duty series has lost close to 50 million players in a year. That’s according to a recent Activision investor report.
As reported by Game Rant, the Call of Duty series has taken a serious hit with player numbers between 2021 and 2022. It’s said that this is the biggest drop in player numbers since the release of free-to-play battle royale, Warzone which launched in 2020.
We can only speculate why players have been jumping off the bandwagon. For starters, sales for the most recent entry in the series, Call of Duty: Vanguard were down by 36% compared to Black Ops Cold War which was released in 2020.
I have also seen rumblings online that some players are not happy with various aspects of Warzone such as its map and weapons since the launch of Vanguard. Then we also have the ever-concerning issue of cheaters that plague online multiplayer games. Even with Activision’s anti-cheat software, Ricochet, the problem is still rife.
Can Warzone be saved?
Activision really has to pull something special out of the bag if it is going to recoup many of its deserting players. However, starting from May 11th, Godzilla and King Kong are coming to Warzone.
I’m not sure how that might work. If I was going to take a guess, I’d hope that as Godzilla and King Kong are fighting, the map is being destroyed and shrinking in size as a consequence as players get eliminated from the match.
Will Godzilla and King Kong be able to save Call of Duty and Warzone? Only time will tell. If all else fails, Activision might have to pin its hopes on the rumoured Warzone sequel.
