Here are the rest of our choices for the best magic games!
6. Dragon’s Dogma
Defeat dragons, explore the open world and cast spells to the amazement of your pawns in Dragon’s Dogma. This 2012 cult hit from Capcom offers players the chance to play as a Mage – or its later vocations, Sorcerer, Mystic Knight and Magick Archer – proficient spellcasters able to wield a variety of elemental and spatial magicks. A fantastic raw power option, complete with long cast times, heavy-hitting blasts, and incredible spell animations that still look amazing today. The recent sequel announcement has seen huge player numbers return to the world of Gransys.
7. Mages of Mystralia
Get creative in Mages of Mystralia, an indie adventure written by Ed Greenwood, legendary creator of the Forgotten Realms D&D setting. Simple on the surface, Mages of Mystralia’s spellcrafting system is astounding when you get into it: rogue mage Zia has to connect together runes to make new spells, a process that’ll see you tinkering away with modifiers and if-then statements. Whether you meticulously design spells to solve puzzles, or cast the runes down and let chaos decide, there are incredible combos to be found within the game’s magical logic.
8. Final Fantasy 14
It’s hard to top a perfectly-timed Meteor or Holy spell: Final Fantasy XIV takes that feeling of power and makes you a god-killing, dimension-travelling force of nature on top of your many magical gifts. Play through this story-heavy game as the classic FF mage jobs, including White, Red or Black Mage, or take arcana further with the Summoner and Astrologian options. Probably the best representation of magic in an MMORPG, you can also try out the limited Blue Mage role, where you steal the enemy’s spells and cast them right back in their face.
9. Noita
Described as a magical action roguelite, Noita is a pixel-generated world of mayhem, in which you – a deranged sorcerer – dive into the depths to find magical mysteries and more. Slice, Drill, Explode and Electrify with the game’s huge variety of spells, which you can create or combine to better manipulate the world around you. Deeply difficult, Noita offers that satisfying roguelike experience where you progress through trial, error, and the ability to turn the baddies into sheep. Just don’t be too sad when you find a cool wand and immediately die before you can use it.
10. Tyranny
Set after the despot overlord has won – and with you firmly on the totem pole of evil – Tyranny is one of the best magic games that allows you to explore what you can do when you don’t have to worry about morals. An engaging, complex and fantasy-rich story, your Fatebinder character isn’t bound to a specific class, but spellcasting is a core component of your powers. Tyranny, at its core, is a game about choices. And if your choice is to make freeform spells so powerful you overthrow an entire world order, then that’s just RPG gaming, right?
