The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild showed us a gorgeous, windswept and tempting world, and then told us we could go anywhere. Like the lands of Elden Ring this version of Hyrule is a joy to explore, and you’ll spend hours deciding to reach somewhere intriguing at the risk of challenging an enemy you’re not quite ready to tackle. With an incidental soundtrack that tugs at the heartstrings, Breath of the Wild is an unmissable choice for unfettered exploration. Watch out for Lynels!

Salt and Sacrifice

Lose yourself in the labyrinth of Salt and Sacrifice, sequel to Salt and Sanctuary and all-round mage-eating obliteration fest. Like its predecessor this is a game unashamed about its similarity to Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but there’s something comforting in its indie take on what makes these games so replayable. Bleak, bloody and with great boss battles, this is one for fans of doomed figures fighting back. Now with online multiplayer, which sees you join factions and invade or aid others in their mage-hunting quest.

God of War

Immersed in Norse mythology – complete with misty mountains, brooding revenants and witches – 2018’s God of War reimagines the hack and slash franchise for the open world age. Kratos remains perfectly angry most of the time, and fans of exploration will appreciate the beautiful, surreal locations that the story takes you. A more action-heavy combat experience than Elden Ring, God of War nevertheless offers the same feeling of wonder when exploring and smashing your way through the realms. Plus, there’s a giant, magical world tree here too.

Tunic

Find lost legends and battle ancient monsters in Tunic, the adorable game about a little fox on a large adventure. A deceptively difficult exploration RPG – don’t be fooled by its cute appearance – Tunic takes cues from both the Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda franchises, combining the best bits of each into an isometric experience where exploring feels addictive. As with other games like Elden Ring, this is one where you’ll feel like a genius for finding that perfect shortcut on your travels.

Demon’s Souls

You can’t talk about what to play after Elden Ring without mentioning its compatriots, and Demon’s Souls tops the list for its breathtaking visuals, cerebral combat and commitment to letting you build the most ridiculous character possible. This PS5 remaster of the original showcases the powerful platform Elden Ring sprung from, and its boss fights are still amongst the best the series has to offer. It’s not an open world, but the separate locales of Demon’s Souls all feel dark, distinct and decrepit in the best kind of way. Plus, there’s only one poison swamp!
