6. Apex Legends
Mixing hero characters with tight gameplay, Apex Legends is one of the most popular battle royales around, and it’s easy to see why: this is a game that understands its audience very well, releasing regular seasonal content to expand its sci-fi setting and lore. It’s set in the same universe as the Titanfall series – so expect snappy movement and satisfying shooting – and blends serious with silly better than many of its competitors. The huge player base ensures you’ll never need to wait long for a match.
7. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt
The battle for the night is on in Bloodhunt, a free-to-play battle royale set in the rich vampiric universe of the legendary Vampire: The Masquerade games. Stalk the streets of Prague as you play an endlessly stylish vampire on the run, taking down mortals and outwitting one another to come out on top. Aside from the serious nostalgia vibes if you’re a fan of the original RPGs, Bloodhunt offers something different from most games like Fortnite thanks to its mature setting and European gothic aesthetic.
8. Worms Rumble
Worms, but not as you know it. Ditching the turn-based strategising for frantic battle royale action, Worms Rumble is a bold new move for this long-standing franchise, but it works. Fight against other players in real time in hectic modes with fan-fave weapons (bazooka my beloved) and the classic little guys you remember from back in the Mega Drive era, all while trying to remain alive till the end. There isn’t a huge player base, but it’s a welcome addition to any battle royale arsenal.
9. Knightfall: A Daring Journey
Drifting, jousting and knight on knight action take the stage in Knightfall: A Daring Journey, a refreshingly different take on games like Fortnite from indie devs Landfall. Pair up with a mate or a stranger with one objective: reach the rose before anyone else. You’ll fight against other teams on horseback in this racing royale, fighting for space and shelter before you reach the castle and pluck the rose first, taking over the towns and forming a friendship along the way. Probably how the War of the Roses should’ve gone down.
10. Call of Duty: Warzone
As a juggernaut in the world of shooters with a huge fanbase, large budget and years of experience, Call of Duty: Warzone offers a battle royale experience that’s polished, active and hard to compare. The game’s huge map, strategic gameplay and ability to play solo or in a squad offer a truly innovative take on the genre, and the Contract objectives prevent matches from becoming stale. A sequel is officially on its way, which you can enjoy alongside the new Modern Warfare 2. Time to return to Verdansk.
