It has been confirmed that the Resident Evil 4 remake is reducing one of its most annoying features. Can we please get a hallelujah?
Back in the early 2000s, perhaps for a good decade, it seemed near impossible to avoid action games that didn’t have QTE (Quick Time Events) sequences. For the most part, well for me at least, QTEs would annoy the heck out of me.
YOu couldn’t escape a QTE back in the day!
There I was, hoping to enjoy a cinematic cut-scene after a long and testing battle. Only to then be smacked in the face with a wet kipper!
A QTE would unexpectedly invade that epic cinematic cut-scene to only result in instant death. I dislike QTEs so much, that I even went as far as to write a dissertation on that particular annoyance of mine.
Furthermore, some QTEs would not stop at cinematic cutscenes. Sometimes they would happen during gameplay. The cheek of it! One such game that liked to throw a QTE smack, bang in the middle of gameplay was Resident Evil 4.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate all QTEs, sometimes they can have their place. Such as during Gears of War when you’re having a chainsaw battle with an enemy to see who gets to chop the other in half first. However, games such as Shenmue just loved to throw in a QTE at every opportunity. Though I still love Shenmue.
OG Resident Evil 4 loved a QTE!
In the original Resident Evil 4, most QTEs would involve smashing the button as Leon would make an escape or perform a well-timed dodge to avoid getting impaled. However, following the recent Resident Evil 4 remake gameplay reveal, the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi revealed that QTEs would be toned down in the remake.
During a video interview with IGN, Hirabayashi said: “people have different definitions of what a QTE is… I can say that there aren’t prompts to press buttons mid-cutscene.”
So, it seems that QTEs will still have their place in the RE4 remake. As we’ve seen with Leon’s new parry attack using his knife. However, at least we know that they’ll be no pesky QTE during an epic cut-scene. Happy days.

When is the Resident Evil 4 release date?
