Here are the most anticipated PlayStation games of 2023 and beyond so far. 2023 truly promises to be a great year.
So, I’ve compiled a list of my top PlayStation games for 2023 and beyond. As this list is restricted, obviously a lot of games never made the cut, otherwise, we’d be here all day.
What’s more, each of the titles in this list will be exclusive or time-exclusive. It’s also worth keeping in mind that release dates and windows can change in an instant. That being said, here are my most anticipated PlayStation games for 2023 and beyond (so far).
Final Fantasy 16 (PC/PlayStation 5)
Announced in 2020, anticipation for Square Enix’s next entry in the legendary Final Fantasy series is at a high. Like Final Fantasy games that came before, the 16th numbered entry will be its standalone tale. Forces of good and evil embark on a collision course on a date with destiny.
In Final Fantasy 16, you play Clive Rosfield, known as the “First Shield of Rosaria” and the sworn protector of his younger brother, Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix, Eikon of Fire.
However, when a blight swarms the lands and endangers everyone and everything across the six nations of Valisthea, only one person can save the day and that man’s name is Clive.
Final Fantasy 16 currently has a release date of June 16th, 2023 for PlayStation 5. It will then be released for PC six months later.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (PlayStation 5)
The original Final Fantasy 7 was released for the first PlayStation back in 1997. FF7 is not only considered to be the best game in the series. Some even consider it to be the best game ever. Fast forward 23 years and Final Fantasy 7 Remake arrived for PS4 in 2020, followed by a PS5 in 2021.
Unlike the original game, the remake is to be released in two parts, with its conclusion arriving in late 2023. That’s assuming we get no delays, of course.
Without giving too much away, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will carry on exactly where FF7 Remake left off. Will Cloud, Tifa, Barrett and friends be able to stop the evil corporation
Shinra and save Midgar once and for all? Only time will tell. Unless you’ve played the OG, then you know the outcome. So shoosh, no spoilers!
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will release in late 2023 or early 2024 for PlayStation 5.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (PlayStation 5)
Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games became an instant classic when it was released for PS4 in 2018 before its PS5 remaster arrived in 2020. The story is a familiar one, Peter Parker aka Spider-Man is the friendly-neighbourhood hero of Queen’s, New York.
New York is full of deadly enemies, and at times, it’s even too difficult for the great Spider-Man 2 bear. Thankfully, along with Mary Jane and Aunt May, a new web-slinging here arose from Brooklyn, New York to help save the city once more. None other than Miles Morales.
However, when one threat is eradicated, another will emerge. Enter the villain of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the symbiotic nemesis, known as Venom.
I must also give a notable mention to Marvel’s Wolverine, also from Insomniac Games. However, at the time of writing, Logan doesn’t have a release date. As much as Spider-Man 2, Marvel’s Wolverine is one of the most highly anticipated games coming to PlayStation 5.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases for PlayStation 5 sometime in late 2023.
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores (PlayStation 5)
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is the story expansion to the main game. Taking place in the volcanic-ridden city of Los Angeles, Aloy ventures far south to new lands full of hostile enemies and robotic creatures that continue to ravage our lands in the distant future of 3040.
I won’t wander into spoiler territory here, because the Burning Shores takes place directly after the events of Forbidden West. Unfortunately, the Burning Shores expansion is PS5 only and will not come to PS4.
“Our creative vision for the Burning Shores is an ambitious expansion which will take Aloy to the ruins of Los Angeles,” said Guerrilla Games in a PS Blog post. “It’s an overgrown and fractured city that can be fully explored via the water and flying on the back of a Sunwing.”
They continued: “To achieve this grand vision technically and creatively, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus all our efforts on making an incredible experience exclusively for the PlayStation 5 console.”
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores will release for PlayStation 5 on April 19th, 2023.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC/PlayStation 5)
Announced at a PlayStation Showcase in 2021, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the highly anticipated remake of BioWare’s classic from 2003. Not much is known about the remake at this time. However, it is being developed by Aspyr Media. Well, that is unless the rumours are true and the remake has been handed over to a new developer.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is said to be a one-to-one recreation of the original, built from the ground up. Hopefully, this remake isn’t having the development troubles that were led to believe, and when it finally releases, the remake will do the original the justice it deserves.
Star Wars: Knights of the Republic currently does not have a release date. The remake is also expected to release for Xbox Series X|S at a later date.
Silent Hill 2 remake (PC/PlayStation 5)
Silent Hill 2 is a game that is near and dear to the hearts of many. When the original game was released in 2001 it was quickly recognised as a psychological horror masterpiece and is widely considered to be one of the best games of all time.
While many would have liked to have seen a modern remake of the original Silent Hill from 1999, the announcement of the SH2 remake was exciting news nonetheless.
I know, we had Shattered Memories in 2009/10. However, that was a very different Silent Hill game, that wasn’t all that scary and was nowhere near as successful as other entries. But to Konami’s credit, it tried something different with that release.
Konami jumps straight into Silent Hill 2
When the Silent Hill 2 remake was announced in October 2022, it was revealed alongside a follow-up to the 2006 movie directed by Christophe Gans. Effectively, we’re getting a faithful Silent Hill 2 remake and movie.
At the time, ignoring Silent Hill: Revelation (2012) for good reason, the new Silent Hill 2 movie is to be directed by Gans once more. Konami also revealed that the new remake is to accompany the movie, perhaps revealing some of the motivations as to why Konami jumped straight to SH2 and skipped the 1999 original.
Can Bloober Team deliver?
Nonetheless, fans are no doubt excited for the Silent hill 2 remake, if not somewhat cautious that it’s being developed by Bloober Team.
While the polish studio has developed some decent horror titles such as Layers of Fear, Observer, Blair Witch and The Medium, they’ve never hit dizzying heights of story-telling and at times, the studio’s games are cursed with pacing issues.
Will the expectations of the Silent Hill legacy be too much for Bloober Team or will they finally knock one out of the park? Only time will tell. I’m rooting for the latter, because this remake is most certainly one of the most anticipated games for PlayStation.
The Silent Hill 2 remake has no release date at this time, but it was announced for PC and PlayStation 5. Hopefully, an Xbox Series X|S release will follow at a later date.
This remake doesn’t have a release date at this time; however, a 2023 release date might be wishful thinking. So, a 2024 release window might be more likely. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will release first for PC and PS5, then for Xbox Series X|S at a later date.
So that concludes our most anticipated PlayStation games for 2023 and beyond (so far). I’ve missed quite a few games from my list, so be sure to sound out your favourites across our social media channels.
