Following last night’s Xbox 20th anniversary event, it has been revealed that there will be no more backwards compatible games.
The Xbox 20th anniversary event celebrated all things Xbox of yesteryear. We looked back at the launch of the original Xbox in 2001. How Xbox evolved online console gaming, the glorious Xbox 360 generation, right up to the modern 4K era.
Despite evolving through the years and adapting to the demands of the modern-day, Microsoft has always appreciated the value of nostalgia. So much so that Microsoft introduced backwards compatibility with the Xbox One.
The backwards compatibility on Xbox One allowed gamers to play select classic Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on the current systems. This feature would continue evolving into the generation of the Xbox Series X|S. Furthermore, not only do classic games benefit from a glorious HD resolution, but some games would even get a smooth framerate boost.
All good things must come to an end
Sadly, all good things must come to an end as there will be no more games coming to Xbox backwards compatibility. The news was revealed by Xbox compatibility program lead Peggy Lo when speaking on the official Xbox website.
“While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games,” said Lo. “We have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalogue from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints.”
To be fair, Microsoft has been spoiling us with all the backwards compatibility goodness over the years and it’s probably not sustainable to keep it going. After all, there are 1000s of Xbox games across all generations.
This week, 76 games were added to backwards compatibility and a further 37 received an FPS Boost.
