Recent sales statistics have revealed too many people have overpaid when buying Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 5.
Following its launch last week, Horizon Forbidden West became Sony’s second most successful game on PS5 this year. At least, so far. Only Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold more copies on PS5 as a PlayStation exclusive. That being said, seeing as Forbidden West has only been out for a week, I expect that to change in the near future.
However, as revealed by Gamesindustry.biz, in terms of sales, 68% of boxed sales were on PlayStation 5. This means that 32% of people did not buy the PlayStation 4 version of the game.
So, what’s the problem?
The problem is, regardless of whether you buy Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 or PS5, both versions will play on the new-gen console. Meaning that if you bought the PS4 version, you would receive a new-gen upgrade for free.
However, the PS5 version of Horizon Forbidden West is £10/$10 more expensive than the PS4 version. In a nutshell, you could be paying £10/$10 more for the exact same game. The only real difference is that the more expansive version has a PS5 paper sleeve in the case.
Even if you don’t own a PS5 yet, just by buying the PS4 version, you’ll not only save money, but you’ll also still be able to play the new-gen version when your time comes. In defence of those paying more than what’s needed, it might be the case that some prefer to have the PS5 sleeve.
It also doesn’t help the fact that Sony has made the free upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 more complicated than it needs to be. That being said, if you haven’t picked up the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, it might be worthwhile to save a bit of money by picking up the PS4 copy.
