Beginner’s Guide: Tips & Tricks For Among Us

2020 has seen a number of excellent multiplayer games jump to success. From Call of Duty to Fall Guys, we thought we’d seen it all – until Among Us entered the arena. Originally released in 2018, it must have been quite a shock to developer Innersloth when the game suddenly skyrocketed to fame, becoming one of Twitch’s most-watched titles and even securing celebrity playthroughs with everyone from YouTube stars to politicians. Whether you struggle to win, or if you’re just looking to improve your game, here’s 10 tips and tricks you need to know in Among Us!

Tip & Tricks For Playing As A Crewmate In Among Us

1. DON’T GO SOLO

Don’t go off on your own unless you absolutely have to. Sticking with at least one other person means you’ll have easier access to new information as you’ll know where they’ve been and they’ll be able to clear you in return, but that’s not all. Making a friend or two means you’ll always have a hand with your tasks (always good to have someone watching your back as you fail with Simon Says). Be smart and stick with a buddy – just make sure it’s someone you trust!

2. AVOID TUNNEL VISION

Don’t tunnel vision your tasks as this could put you at risk! More than anything, Among Us is a game about gathering information, and depending on whichever map you’re dealt, there’s a lot more to keep tabs on than just your Crewmate tasks.

Be sure to make use of the cameras every once in a while. This isn’t only good for catching the odd murder but you can use that information to catch people out in meetings: “Oh you’re at navigation green? So how come I just saw you near admin?”

On Polus, check the vitals as you pass to alert you of any deaths. Watching vitals can be good if you think there’s going to be a death soon as it gives you the exact time frame. Be sure to stand far to the right though, as the camera can see you there and it makes you a little bit safer.

Some maps will give you the tools to check up on how many people are in one room, or who’s passed where in the corridors. This info can make the difference between life and death, so don’t ignore it!

3. PLAY THE TRICKSTER

Faking people out is a fantastic way in which you can gather new information just by using your wily skills and cunning. Among Us gives you the opportunity to “trick” others, so try and make your behaviour very different to the outcome you’re aiming for.

For example, if you’re in the death house that is Electrical and you see there’s three of you, go to leave and wait five seconds in the corridor. Make your sudden re-entrance and there’s a good chance you’ll catch a dead body – and you’ll know exactly who’s to blame!

4. DON’T IMMEDIATELY REPORT A BODY

Among Us tips and tricks don’t have to be groundbreaking, and this might seem like an obvious one, but reporting a dead body immediately isn’t always the smartest move. Sometimes it’s better to fully check the area you’ve found a body in, as Crewmates usually have a lower vision range than the Imposter, and they might still be at the scene of the crime, just out of your view. Make sure the area is fully checked before you call in the body, but don’t wait too long as you won’t want to look suspicious!

5. DON’T CALL UNNECESSARY MEETINGS

Though it can be tempting, it’s best to not call any unnecessary meetings. Calling a meeting removes dead bodies from the map, which could lose you valuable information. If nothing’s happened for a while and there’s no Vitals to check, calling a meeting can be good as it resets kill cooldown time of Imposters, but don’t do it too often or unnecessarily as it will stop your Crewmates from doing their tasks.

1. WATCH OUT FOR THE CAMERAS!

This might seem like an obvious one but you’d be surprised at how many people forget to keep tabs on the cameras. If you’re going to vent into a corridor with a camera, or if you’re about to make a kill, make sure you’re keeping an eye out for any blinking red camera lights or it’s game over for you!

2. BE SMART WITH SABOTAGE

Use your Sabotage smartly. Don’t just use for the sake of it (though it can be tempting!) Use your Sabotage to lead people away from your latest kill or use the doors to shut people in, either to slow people down or to trap them. Don’t work harder, just work smarter!

3. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE LIGHTS SABOTAGE

Contrary to popular belief, the Lights Sabotage is actually a really nifty tool which you can easily use to your advantage. Triggering the Lights Sabotage greatly reduces the visibility of the Crew, meaning you can sneak in a kill completely unnoticed (if you’re careful, of course!) Lights is usually your best option when the Crewmates decide to stick together too, as it makes stack kills much safer.

4. DON’T SPAM SABOTAGES

When it comes to Among Us tips and tricks, this might seem obvious, but don’t underestimate it! When you’re teamed up with at least one other Imposter and you’re already dead, don’t spam Sabotages. It can be tempting to do this, as when you’re dead that’s all that’s left really, but if you randomly spam Sabotages it can make it harder for the Imposter left remaining to implement their own strategy.

5. KEEP TABS ON YOUR WIN CONDITION

Always bear in mind your win condition and time you have left (which depends on number of players in the lobby and number of players left alive). If there’s six Crewmates left and two Imposters, you can go straight for the win, but if there’s 8 and you’re the only Imposter, you’ll have to kill quickly to outpace their tasks. You’ll always want to prioritise strategy over speed, but in desperate situations you just have to act fast. Judge actions accordingly.
