Riot Games’ Valorant has taken the competitive gaming world by storm, but how does it stack up compared to some of the most legendary shooters in its field? Well, according to pro gamer and G2 founder Ocelote, it’s going to obliterate Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
In a recent interview with ESPN Esports [via Dexerto], G2 Esports founder Carlos ‘Ocelote’ Rodriguez Santiago expressed his belief that Valorant is a showstopper not just because of its gameplay, but because of its intricate lore and fully-fleshed-out characters.
“A video game is not just a video game, it’s what happens around the video games,” he told the publication.
“In Valorant, you have different characters and each character has lore and background. We, humans, are very empathetic by nature so we want to know about these characters.”
Ocelote went on to say that this is going to be one of the biggest selling points of Valorant in the future – especially as lore and character is something sorely missing from the beloved CS: GO.
“[I think Valorant will] end up destroying, in terms of numbers of people playing the game, Counter-Strike,” he said. “Because in Counter-Strike, the only thing you have going for you is the mechanics and I love the game to death, I really do.”
Riot Games’ 5v5 character based tactical shooter is the company’s first foray into the FPS genre, and it definitely made a splash when it launched earlier this year.
Already finding its feet after its full release in June 2020, Valorant has become an incredibly popular shooter with a fanbase that’s definitely appreciative of the game’s exciting stories and characters.
Hopefully the continued success of Valorant means we’ll eventually see it come to console. Following its PC launch, executive producer Anna Donlon addressed the potential of a console version of the game, suggesting we might not need to rule it out.
“We are definitely prototyping that right now,” Donlon said. “But there’s a way to play this game and there’s a way to experience this game that we’re not entirely sure translates completely to console play.”
Donlon added that it’s not a “no” for the game coming to console right now.
