Dead Island 2 may not have landed yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans of the franchise getting stuck into whatever they can find on the game – including a five-year-old playable build which has somehow leaked online.
As spotted by Eurogamer, the Dead Island 2 build can be downloaded and played for yourself right now, but it’s pretty clearly not going to look anything like the final product that we’re still hoping to get our hands on.
The prototype is dated June 2015, which was about a month before the developer, Yager, split from the game’s publisher, Deep Silver. Since then, Dead Island 2 has found a new home with Dambuster Studios, with the title being published by THQ Nordic, Deep Silver’s parent company.
Interestingly, the leaked build is looking pretty solid, with the only real issues being some missing assets here and there. It’s not exactly a pretty thing, but it’s definitely worth checking out – especially if you’re into game design and development.
So where did the build come from? Well, the leaked popped up on 4Chan, where is was quickly verified as being the real deal. Check it out in the video below.
It’s been a long time since we last heard anything on Dead Island 2, but it’s apparently still in development. It’s definitely not been smooth sailing though, as Dambuster Studios is now the third development studio who’s gotten the rights to the game in the space of just five years.
With the next generation of console gaming on the horizon, it’s not all too clear what’s set to be happening with Dead Island 2. Considering we haven’t seen anything new of the game for nearly a full year, it’s pretty optimistic to expect it’s coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 anytime soon. Still, stranger things have happened!
