Dead Island 2 is seemingly no longer releasing for last-gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One, that’s according to job listings on the Dambuster Studios’ website.
It’s hard to believe that Dead Island 2 was first announced way back at E3 2014 and was supposed to be released in 2016. Here in 2021, we’re still waiting for the perhaps doomed game.
To say that Dead Island 2 has had a troubled development is an understatement. It’s been delayed for a number of years and has switched developers three times so far, with the most recent being Dambuster Studios.
The job listing was spotted by video game industry analyst MauroNL, who said that Dambuster Studios is looking for programmers with experience working with DirectX 12 and DirectX Ray-Tracing.
However, the website also states that Dead Island 2 is coming to “Next-Gen consoles and PC platforms”. Up until now, Dead Island 2 was also supposed to come to PS4 and Xbox One, as well as next-gen consoles, but apparently, there is no longer any mention of last-gen platforms on the website.
“Dead Island 2 is moving to a release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC only. Current developer Dambuster Studios lists the game for “Next-Gen Consoles and PC platforms”. The studio is also hiring for programmers with experience in DirectX 12 and DirectX Ray Tracing.” said MauroNL in an initial tweet of three.
“Originally announced in 2016 for PS4, XB1, and PC the game had a troubled development cycle, having switched developers 3 times. Publisher Deep Silver recently reiterated the game is still very much coming.”
Personally, it does not surprise me that it looks like the last-gen version of Dead Island 2 has been ditched, especially since we’re now in the new generation of consoles.
Perhaps a reason that Dead Island 2 has struggled so much is due to the PS4 and Xbox One not being able to run the game to a certain standard.
Let’s not forget that this is a game that was announced seven years ago and has pretty much been in development hell ever since.
However, I do believe that Dambuster Studios is hard at work putting its best efforts into making Dead Island 2 happen and it will release (eventually).
