Netflix continues to crack down on password sharing. New software is being tested to stop sharing accounts outside of your household.
In a recent blog post, Netflix’s director of product innovation, Chengyi Long revealed that new features are currently being tested in select regions. At this time, three countries in South America are participating, Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.
The blog states that if a “subscriber” attempts to log in to a Netflix account outside of the household, they will be prompted to pay a service package. This charge amounts to 2,380 CLP (Chile), $2.99 USD (Costa Rica) and 7.9 PEN (Peru).
“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans,” said Long. “While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared.”
Furthermore, the software is also testing new features that will allow subscribers to transfer profile information including personalised recommendations as well as other profile data. This information can be transferred to a new account or an Extra Member sub-account.
Prices are going up, again!
The news of Netflix cracking down on account sharing arrives days after it was announced that the subscription cost is rising, again. In the UK, prices will rise from £5.99 to £6.99 (Basic Tier), £9.99 to £10.99 (Standard Tier) and finally, £13.99 to £15.99 (Premium Tier).
