6. Dragon Age: Inquisition
With a sequel in the works that’s just as anticipated as The Elder Scrolls VI, Dragon Age: Inquisition is an epic action RPG where you play as a hero gifted (or cursed, depending on your mood) with a unique power to save the world. And while the Inquisitor’s Breach powers aren’t quite the same as Dragon Shouts, the game’s overall vibe is one of the closest to Skyrim yet: warring factions, disobedient mounts and dragons appearing out of the mists above all play a prominent role in this incredible RPG experience.
7. Far Cry Primal
Far Cry Primal is an energetic first-person shooter game without the guns, which leaves the game feeling surprisingly like Skyrim. Players take control of Takkar, a hunter skilled in the use of spears, clubs and bows, and there’s an incredible familiarity in the way players can sneak into a camp and devastate it using only these simple melee weapons. Sadly, there are no dragons in the Stone Age, but Far Cry Primal has just enough hints of the supernatural to spice up its bear-and-bandit world.
8. Outward: Definitive Edition
Outward is all about remarkable journeys. Set in the vast world of Aurai, this fantasy RPG sees players making difficult decisions between adventure and survival in a world where you are a commoner rather than a hero. Sometimes punishing and with an auto-save function that prevents players from resetting any mistakes, Outward nevertheless captures the feeling of accomplishment that you get when mastering a hardcore game’s secrets. Play the definitive edition of this indie open world adventure to experience it as it deserves.
9. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Another first-person fighting experience, Kingdom Come: Deliverance offers an authentic take on medieval life, with a strong focus on roleplay experiences as you navigate the politics (and swords) of 15th century Bohemia. Think Stormcloaks vs. Imperials, but better. While there are no supernatural elements to be found, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is nevertheless one of the best games like Skyrim thanks to its similar combat style and focus on an unlikely hero in an ongoing conflict. Plus, there’s a lockpicking skill with its own minigame, which is undoubtedly something that more RPGs need to lean into.
10. Elden Ring
Set in a brooding high fantasy world with a plot teased out by George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring captures the same loneliness provoked by exploring the more remote regions of Skyrim. But while Skyrim might be somewhat lenient when it comes to stumbling across enemies unprepared, Elden Ring is a true Souls game in that you’ll probably end up painted across the (gorgeous, very vivid) scenery of the Lands Between. Essentially, if you have fond memories of being killed by a dragon while on horseback, Elden Ring is a no-brainer choice for open world exploration.
Elden Ring is available on the GameByte Shop from £49.95.
