Portal Writer Wants To Make A Third Game: ‘I’m Not Getting Any Younger’

The writer of Portal, Erik Wolpaw, has said that if Valve wants a Portal 3 it needs to start soon because he’s “not getting any younger.

While for the most part Portal 2 ended pretty conclusively, it’s safe to say plenty of fans would be happy with a Portal 3. And it seems like the original writer of Portal thinks the same thing.

As in a recent interview, Wolpaw spoke about the need to make it soon before he gets too old. “I am not getting any younger,” Wolpaw told KiwiTalkz (thanks, Kotaku). “We are reaching the point where it’s crazy to think [the original development team is] literally going to be too old to work on Portal 3, so we should just do it.”

Of course, as with any game there are business decisions to take into consideration. Games cost money, often a lot of it, and they need to have the potential to make it back. But Wolpaw thinks that sometimes it might be worth it to make a game that won’t necessarily make a huge amount of money, even if there’s a risk.

The problem is with 300 employees… and I don’t know exactly the breakdown [between] the production side versus the Steam business side versus legal… there’s a lot of opportunity cost to taking 75 people and trying to get a game made. As much as it seems like Valve often is just a bunch of people sitting around sipping gin and tonic, everyone’s working.”

Wolpaw made the point that a potential Portal 3 likely wouldn’t make the kind of money that Counter-Strike: GO makes. “But… maybe not every game needs to make Counter-Strike: GO money. Gabe, if you’re listening…

Portal originally released in 2007, with its sequel having been released in 2011. The most recent entry to the Portal universe is Aperture Desk Job, which Wolpaw served as freelance writer on. Though it certainly isn’t the Portal 3 that many want.
