The Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and Mortal Kombat movies have been delayed, showing that yes, we’re in for another year of delays.
According to Variety, the Resident Evil movie reboot has been pushed back from its initial September 3rd release date to November 24th, 2021.
The apparent reason for the delay was due to its launch clashing with the Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be directed by Johannes Roberts and will have nothing to do with the movies from Paul W.S Anderson which starred Mila Jovovich (thankfully).
The new Resident Evil movie will be a fresh reboot and will be an origins tale that is said to follow its video game source material, which I’m sure will please many Resi fans.
The events of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will take place prior to the T-Virus outbreak and will feature locations such as the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City (obviously).
In relation to the Mortal Kombat delay, thankfully this is an even shorter pushback of only a week. Mortal Kombat was originally scheduled to release on April 16th, but it will now release on April 23rd (via Variety).
The Mortal Kombat movie is from Warner Bros, who is also releasing the highly-anticipated Godzilla vs. King Kong this week. From what I can tell, the Mortal Kombat delay is just to give both movies a little bit more breathing space in between cinema releases, in the hope to further boost ticket sales.
So there you have it, assuming both movies will suffer no further delays, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City releases on November 24th and Mortal Kombat on April 23rd. A UK release date for Mortal Kombat has yet to be confirmed.
