Cosplay has the ability to bring retro, and even forgotten, characters back to life in a new way. Reddit cosplayer Tniwe recreated the classic look recently, sharing the results with fans on the official Mortal Kombat Reddit page.
Sonya Blade is one of the series’ longest standing characters, first appearing in the original Mortal Kombat. Since then, she has featured in over 21 Mortal Kombat games, as well as making an appearance in the live action takes on the violent series.
Tniwe posted the strikingly similar cosplay last week on Reddit, and the week before with a different image from the set. The cosplayer included Sonya’s original design, which features her white sneakers, hairstyle, armbands and lipstick. There cosplayer also exhibits the same energy of the character, posing in energetic stances.
Feedback from people on the posts is positive, with users commenting on how perfect the cosplay is. Reddit user BrotonomaBay said “I’m [at a loss] for words for how good this is,” while another user called BloodysymphonyX commented “Looks like the game! Excellent job.”
Cosplay has grown in popularity over the past few decades. Thanks to the power of cosplaying communities, many games often end up remaining in the public spotlight thanks to passionate fans. A recent Death Stranding cosplay showed what the game would look like in real life against the backdrop of a volcanic Japanese island.
