In a statement on Twitter, Yoshinori Ono revealed that he’s passing Street Fighter 6 onto a new generation of game developers, after having been with the franchise almost since its very beginning.

“I’ve been with the Street Fighter brand for a long time, experiencing good times, bad times, and even non-existent times,” Ono said in his Twitter statement. “My heart is filled with appreciation to those players who’ve been giving warm and kind support on the brand especially little over the past decade or so as all the activities on the Street Fighter brand regained sunshine and grew its liveliness.

“And now, after serving almost 30 years at Capcom, I am leaving the company in this summer. This means that I will resign my position as the brand manager for Capcom’s various titles including Street Fighter.”

He didn’t give any specific reason for his departure, but it’s definitely sad news for one of Capcom’s most beloved franchises. Yoshinori Ono is known for being the face of the Street Fighter brand, and his meme-worthy love for the character Blanka will never be forgotten.

Ono began his career with Capcom in the early 1990s, working as a sound producer for Street Fighter. His career blossomed when he became producer of Street Fighter 4, and has since been at the forefront of almost all SF news and action.

Ono’s career at Capcom hasn’t just been limited to SF though, as he’s also worked on other lucrative and beloved series including Darkstalkers and Monster Hunter. He even spearheaded Capcom Vancouver, the developer behind the Dead Rising games, for a time.

The internet has been flooded with messages of thanks from many in the gaming community, including known video games leaker Nibel and – of course – thousands of adoring fans.

Wishing you nothing but the best, Ono!
