Magic: the Gathering and Street Fighter are getting a crossover, and we’ve gotten a first look at the art for the upcoming cards.
The cards were announced last summer, but we haven’t seen the art up until now. Showing it off on Twitter, the official Street Fighter Twitter account revealed the art and which of the fighters are getting the MTG treatment.
There are of course cards based off of Ryu and Chun-Li. But also characters like Blanka, Guile, Ken, Dhalsim, Zangief, and E. Honda. Magic: the Gathering does occasionally feature guest artists, but rather than in the Street Fighter 2D art style, the cards are in the MTG art style. So some of the characters have more of a realistic look to them than their video game counterparts.
The crossover is specifically a crossover with The Secret Lair. Where The Secret Lair differs from typical MTG cards is the unique cards it has. And it has featured other crossovers with series like Warhammer: 40,000 and the Netflix series Arcane.
However, The Secret Lair collabs haven’t pleased everyone. The cards are printed on-demand, where players need to join a queue to purchase them. This means not all players will be able to get the unique cards, which has led to some controversy.
Each of the Street Fighter cards will have unique abilities, mimicking some of their abilities from the games. There will be standard cards which have these abilities available in standard booster packs. But part of the controversy is the limited release of cards with the Street Fighter art.
