6. Five Nights at Freddy’s

Jumpscares, jumpscares everywhere. That’s the idea behind Five Nights at Freddy’s, the 2014 smash hit by Scott Cawthon that spawned countless Let’s Play videos and finally gave us a reason to be scared of family-friendly restaurants. Deceptively simple in concept and execution, Five Nights at Freddy’s sees you play as Mike, a security guard tasked with making sure the restaurant animatronics behave themselves after hours, while simultaneously avoiding being stuffed into a spare suit in a gore-filled end. Imagine all that for a paycheck of $120.50.

You can grab Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach on the GameByte Shop from £32.95.

7. Silent Hill 2

Horror goes psychological with Silent Hill 2, widely considered one of the best horror games ever made both now and when it was released in 2001. Influenced by legends Junji Ito, David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock, the game is packed with enough symbolism to set the Nurses spinning. Silent Hill 2 is definitely an experience that stays with you after playing, thanks to the vivid setting, where the town of Silent Hill is as much a character as protagonist James Sunderland. There’s just something about American rural towns that makes for excellent horror.

Bloober Team is also rumoured to be working on a remake.

8. Phasmophobia

Released in early access in 2020, investigative horror game Phasmophobia occupies an unusual niche thanks to its ability to be played cooperatively. Make no mistake here: the presence of other players does nothing to diminish this haunting game’s horror factor, as the speech recognition system means your conversation fuels the paranormal activity, cranking it up to an interactive notch that really gets in your head. Ghosts react to what you’re saying – yes, even when you’re freaking out incoherently – making it a popular choice for streamers and their audience to enjoy the experience together.

9. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

Some of the best horror lies in the incomprehensible, a concept that GameCube classic Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem understands to its core. Split across plotlines, characters and time periods, the game is a love letter to cosmic horror with its innovative sanity mechanic affecting not only the characters but environment and design elements themselves. To this day, it’s still unnerving to be asked if you want to delete all your saved games. An essential game for fans of Edgar Allan Poe, or people with a copy of the Necronomicon on their bookshelf.

10. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Puzzles meet Prussia in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a survival horror game that truly understands what makes a helpless protagonist feel terrifying. Gone are the pistols and combat expertise of Capcom horror games; the player can only run or hide from the game’s plethora of unknowable monsters or risk immediate death. The protagonist’s (and player’s) sanity is at risk as he battles with amnesia, dark spaces and inability to turn cranks faster than a snail pace in the bowels of an appropriately scary, Victorian-era European castle.
