Here are the rest of our best PS4 games of all time list!
6. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn’s initial premise is so simple yet grabbing: robot dinosaurs vs a huntress wielding a bow and arrow. But then, the more you play and get sucked into this post-apocalyptic land ruled by machines and the world it’s set in, including the events that lead to it, the more amazed you’ll be.
Although being an entirely new direction for Killzone developer Guerilla Games, Horizon stands strong as a unique contender in both story and combat. Whilst you’re exploring a world reborn thousands of years beyond our modern era, you have to apply your wits to a selection of weapons and traps to take down a wide variety of animal-like machines. Without a doubt, Horizon is one of the most refreshing new franchises to come on the PS4.
You can buy Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete Edition on PS4 for £11.95.
7. Persona 5 Royal
Being an anime fan isn’t a must, but either way, Persona 5 was already one of the best JRPGs to play. With Persona 5 Royal though, we were given proof that perfection CAN be improved.
A 100+ hour runtime might look intimidating, but every minute is crucial to a phenomenal story and gameplay experience you won’t get tired of. Adding a third semester, extra dungeons, and new members to an already captivating cast of characters, even retreading familiar territory from the base game still feels fresh.
In its deep social simulation system and all that goes towards it, every interaction feels all the more meaningful. The combat and soundtrack – snappier and more and more engaging than ever before – making strategy, honing in on an opponent’s weaknesses, and utilising your socially simulated relationships all blend together for an adventure that embodies the word “stylish”. Persona 5 Royal is absolutely one of the best JRPGs of all time.
You can buy Persona 5 Royal on PS4 for £19.95.
8. Resident Evil 2
Not every in-demand remake meets expectations on release. Resident Evil 2, though, blew everyone away. Reworking the series’ RE Engine, the Resident Evil 2 remake is one of the most specularly horrifying – making the blood-soaked gore of the zombies and their victims more realistic than ever.
With the behemoth Mr X into the mix as well, Resident Evil 2 carries that genre-iconic sense of unease and anxiety without fail. Jaw-dropping graphics, tense puzzles, and monstrous horrors – the Resident 2 remake as it all, and is one of the best survival horror games you can play.
You can buy Resident Evil 2 on PS4 for £15.95.
9. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is a testament that you can still attract new players even if they’ve never played the previous games. That’s not only because of Wild Hunt’s massive quality jump over the still-great Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, but because The Witcher 3 is still one of the best open-world games ever made, even though it’s now seven years old.
A gargantuanly wondrous-yet-dreary mediaeval fantasy world, The Witcher 3’s map is like an endless canvas for escapism with a plethora of adventures to be had. That’s not even when including the fantastic Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, the latter of which is the size of a fully fledged game in its own right. Alongside the main quest of Geralt of Rivia – a badass monster hunter searching for his adopted daughter – many of the game’s numerous side quests have so much value put in, they can feel like a leading narrative on their own. The Witcher universe is fascinating, ever-evolving and rich in lore, and it proudly sits among the best PS4 games.
You can buy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition on PS4 for £16.95.
10. The Last of Us: Remastered
Modern day video games also exist as an engaging medium in storytelling – often matching if not surpassing what’s capable in TV and film. That’s more relevant than ever in one of the best story-driven games of all – The Last of Us.
Remastered onto the PS4, Naughty Dog made the post-apocalyptic adventure look even better than it did on the PS3. Of course, that’s not the heart of why it’s one of the greatest games ever made.
20 years after a mysterious virus spawned zombie-like creatures that ravaged the earth, the world was also exposed to the hidden darkness within humanity – revealing itself after desperation the need to survive took priority. Although a massive shift in tone from what Naughty Dog is used to, they managed to execute this darker tone as if they’d been doing it for decades.
Following the loss of so many, including the daughter he loved, the Joel Miller we meet at the beginning is only consumed by looking out for himself and avoiding the undead with his heart closed, because the world has nothing left to offer him. It’s not until he meets Ellie, the hope for humanity he’s forced to protect, that his heart begins to open again, as does hers in return.
The Last of Us: Remastered is both one of the best PS4 games and one of the best games ever because it represents mankind at both ends. It reminds us that even when the world is steeped in darkness, there’s always hope that the light can pull you out.
You can buy The Last of Us: Remastered on PS4 for £12.95.
