Broketober is now coming into full-swing like Spider-Man speeding through New York City! If you thought that September did some serious over-powered damage to your wallets, wait until you take a look at what’s coming this October. Granted we have some awesome big budget games on the horizon, as well as some indie darlings and some much anticipated DLC. So whether it’s some running and gunning, getting wild in the wild west or pinning your opponent for the 1…2…3! October pretty much has something for everyone’s gaming needs.
Usually with these kinds of articles, I often only highlight about five games, but seeing as October is as jacked as Drew McIntyre, we’ve got plenty more games to highlight in this one. While I can’t talk about everything, as always I will be highlighting the best of the rest too. Finally, please keep in mind that release dates can often change and differ on the region. That said, he’s what’s coming this October 2018 and be sure to let us know what you’re looking forward to across our social media channels.
Forza Horizon 4 (PC, Xbox One) – October 2nd
Forza Horizon 4 is already released for those that pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition, but for those that are picking up the standard edition; your release date will be October 2nd. Moving away for the previous US and Australian locations, the fourth game in the Forza Horizon series takes place in Great Britain. Offering a large variety of racing landscapes such as narrow countryside roads with sharp and sudden bends, the snowy highlands in Scotland, off-road rallying, beach racing across the coastline and so much more. The game will even change and adapt with the four seasons of the year, helping to keep the gameplay experience fresh, while bringing in new challenges with each new season. Forza Horizon 4 promises to be the best game in this spin-off series yet and if you own an Xbox One X or supped up PC, then you’ll also be in for a visual treat. Which by the way, this game also looks stunning on the standard Xbox console too.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 2nd and October 5th
Here’s another game that is offering a different release date depending on which version you pre-order, which I’m not a fan of by the way. Available on October 2nd for the pricier editions and the 5th for the standard edition. Following on the gameplay direction of 2017’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins, the series now takes us to ancient Greece filled with historic personalities, landmarks and mythical creatures. Assassin’s Creed: Origins very much went into an RPG-like direction and so too is this latest instalment. However, what is totally new to this series is that we’ll now be able to choose from playing as either a male or female protagonist. We’re even going to get multiple choice dialogues that change an outcome of your story and if you’re feeling a little flirtatious, you can even spark a budding romance, if you wish. That said, I’m just looking forward to exploring this new, huge open world, discovering secrets and doing my best 300 impression by kicking as many of my victims over an edge of a cliff as possible!
Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (PS4) – October 2nd
With the license previous handled by Tecmo Koei, but is now developed and published by Sega, Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise releases over here in the west on October 2nd (it released March 28th in Japan). Based upon the immensely popular Manga series, this third-person, action-adventure title is powered by the Dragon Engine, the very same engine that brought us Yakuza 6: Songs of Life and Yakuza Kiwami 2, so expect epic beat ‘em up action, wacky mini-games and great fun exploring, and meeting the local residents of Eden. Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but knowing that this is brought to us by the Yakuza team, it might just be introduced to an all-new fan base this coming month.
Super Mario Party (Nintendo Switch) – October 5th
Featuring a total of 80 mini-games, and modes that cater for local and online multiplayer, as well as for singleplayer, Super Mario Party is looking like it could be the best game in this long-running. Making use of the Joy-Con controllers, up-to four players can compete against one another in a crazy variety of mini-games. Sure, it may all start off as friendly competition, but the action will surely get tense very quickly as you aim to beat your other half and children for that podium finish! Super Mario Party will be the perfect party game as we lead up to Christmas and will likely shift a few Nintendo Switch consoles too.
WWE 2K19 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 2nd and October 5th
Yet another game that has a different release date depending on which version you pre-order. October 2nd for those that pick up the Wooooo or Deluxe Editions, and the 5th for the standard edition. The WWE 2K series may struggle to get the long hair mechanics right, but they’ve often been able to capture the fun essence that has earned the WWE it’s fiercely loyal fan base over the years. The gameplay may not have evolved all that much over the last few years, but with a more in-depth MyCareer mode that will see us battle against a Zombie HHH, travel to Matt Hardy’s Multiverse and to fight it out on the Wyatt Compound, this is looking to be the most fun instalment in years And that’s not even taking into account the returning Showcase Mode that follows the WWE career of Daniel Bryan, the inclusion of a Big Head Mode, a packed roster of past and present Superstars, and much more!
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 12th
Here’s a big one, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4! Things kicked off with a controversial start when the game was announced earlier this year, confirming the rumours that Black Ops 4 would not be including a traditional singleplayer mode. While many seem to play exclusively for the multiplayer, there is still a large base of fans that love to play a good old singleplayer campaign too. So minus that discrepancy, Black Ops 4 still looks to be a packed bundle, with not only its traditional multiplayer modes, but also three new Zombie chapters from the get-go in the base game and more notably, Blackout, Call of Duty’s take on the craze that is the Battle Royale. Overall, impressions seemed to be quite favourable from the Blackout beta, but whether Activision can truly go to-to-toe with the likes of PUBG and Fortnite, remains to be seen. But if there is one franchise that stands a chance, then it’s the Call of Duty series.
Luigi’s Mansion (Nintendo 2DS/3DS) – October 12th
A remake of the Nintendo GameCube classic launch title, Luigi’s Mansion finds a new home with its remake for the Nintendo 2DS/3DS. Not only will the visuals be somewhat improved upon, but the Luigi’s Mansion remake will be playable in two-player co-op, whether your friend owns a copy of the game or not, just as long as they have a second 2DS/3DS in hand. Granted this will only be for certain sections, but if they do also own a copy of the game, then you’ll be able to play the entire campaign together. The Luigi’s Mansion remake will also be compatible with amiibo figures and they’ll be a few additional surprises thrown in that wouldn’t have featured in the original release. If your Nintendo 2DS/3DS has been collecting dust of late, then Luigi’s Mansion should be more then enough reason to bring it out of retirement.
Lego DC Super Villains (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch) – October 16th
The Lego series can often be fairly criticised for not evolving all that much over the years. However, while the core gameplay will pretty much remain the same, the big selling point of Lego DC Super Villains is rather then playing as the good guys and gals, you’ll be playing as the villain! Better still, you’ll be able to create your very own super villain, complete with their own unique image and super powers to be played in the games story campaign. Will this feature be enough to keep sales strong leading up to Christmas? There’s every chance that it will, especially as the Lego series is a perfect game for all ages. Lego DC Super Villains won’t be breaking any new ground, but parents and children alike are going to be having a lot of fun playing as the baddies this year!
SoulCalibur VI (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 19th
Starting off its days as Soul Edge on the original PlayStation and arcade way back in 1995, before evolving into SoulCalibur in 1998, it’s been four long years since the release SoulCalibur V on last gen system in 2014. So this month brings us the 6th main numbered entry (not included spin-offs and remasters) with SoulCalibur VI for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. I got to play this game at EGX last week and let me tell you, it was fantastic! Not only did it look gorgeous with its crisp visuals and smooth framerate, but it also played fantastically too. The SoulCalibur series is often known for its unique playable character cameos and this instalment will bring Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher series. If my early impressions were anything to go by, SoulCalibur VI stands a good chance of being the best entry in this long-running series.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox One) – October 26th
I’m not too sure if you’ve heard of this game? But there’s a little known game coming out this October from a little known development studio called Rockstar Games and they’re bringing us a game set in the Wild West entitled Red Dead Redemption 2. Well unless you’ve been living under a rock, and if you have, seriously go and see a doctor about those back pains, like many of us, you’ve been chomping at the bit for this highly anticipated release. Set in the year 1899, before the events of the original Red Dead Redemption on last gen systems, you play as Arthur Morgan and you are a member of the infamous Dutch Van der Linde gang.
After a robbery gone wrong in the town of Blackwater, the gang of forced to flee and live from town to town across the United States with bounty hunters and government officials hot on their heels. The gang must continue to steal and hunt in order to survive, however, Arthur’s morals and loyalties will be put to the test with the continuation of the Honor system as he will be forced to choose between his gang and what he believes in. This will quite literally be Rockstar Games most ambitious title yet and just like GTA V, it will surely be topping the sales charts for years to come. Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in singleplayer form on October 26th, with Red Dead Online launching as a beta this November.
Well that’s my hand-picked highlights for October 2018 and I know there’s many that weren’t singled out, however, you can find all of the best of the rest below, and don’t forget to let us know what you’re looking forward too across our social media channels.
