Good news to fans of Shang-Chi, because Shang-Chi 2 is coming, and Destin Daniel Cretton is returning to write and direct.
An exclusive report from Deadline confirmed the news, as well as a multi-year deal Cretton has formed with Disney. Cretton will be developing multiple projects for both Marvel Studios, and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. He was already confirmed to be working on a Marvel TV series for Disney+.
Cretton will be producing with partner Asher Goldstein through a new production company they are launching, Family Owned. The aim of the production company is to highlight communities typically ignored in pop culture through various films and TV programs.
“Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material. As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience,” said Freeform and Onyx Collective’s president Tara Duncan.
Onyx Collective is a content brand that seeks to platformer content from creators of colour and underrepresented voices. Shang-Chi star Simu Liu celebrated the news with the sarcastic comment, “Flopped so hard we got a sequel!!” on Twitter. A loud minority claimed the film was a flop, simply because it had a majority Asian cast, even though the film grossed $432 million worldwide. So a little bit of sarcasm from Liu is more than understandable.
Shang-Chi 2 does not have a confirmed release date. And the film doesn’t have a confirmed plotline yet either. But as with all Marvel projects, we’re sure to find out soon enough.
