Nintendo has announced that it has purchased Next Level Games, the studio behind some of the best-loved third-party Nintendo titles including Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Next Level Games is the development studio responsible for the likes of Super Mario Strikers, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and most recently Luigi’s Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo stated that it has come to an agreement to buy all remaining outstanding shares of the Canadian based studio and the deal is expected to be concluded by March 1st, 2021.
While Next Level Games has primarily dealt with Nintendo based games since its inception in 2003, they have dabbled a few times with multi-platform games.
However now that Next Level Games will be 100% owned by Nintendo it means that the studio “will serve to secure the availability of NLG development resources for Nintendo”.
It will be interesting to see what the studio will work on next with its last game being Luigi’s Mansion 3 from 2019.
Speaking of which, back in 2019 during a Luigi’s Mansion 3 livestream, a Super Mario Strikers Easter Egg was discovered in the form of an in-game painting which perhaps hints this is what’s next for Next Level Games.
Other than Super Mario Strikers the studio has also developed Punch-Out and Doc Louis’s Punch-Out for the Nintendo Wii in 2009.
It’s very likely that we might see the return of either Super Mario Strikers or Punch-Out from Next Level Games on the Nintendo Switch. Perhaps we’ll get an announcement at E3 or a Nintendo Direct event this year?
