Fair trade-off.

Gamer Sells PS5 In Favour Of Childhood Nintendo 64 Collection

How much is the PS5 worth to you? It’s a question many gamers have probably been asking themselves, especially since they’re so scarce. Resellers are currently cashing in on the PS5 stock situation, with some consoles selling for double their value online. With that in mind, what’d you think a fair trade for the console would be? Well, for one gamer, a PS5 is worth about the same as a Nintendo 64 and a bunch of games.

The trade was made by ResetEra user Traxus, who posted about their decision under the title, “Sold my PS5 for an N64 …send help”.

In the post, Traxus explains how discovering a smashed CRT TV at the side of the road sparked their nostalgic needs [via Gamingbible]:

“Conjuring up images from a lost time, the haunted relic called out to me, much like sirens of the old tales enticed unwary sailors to their doom.

I put it in my trunk, unleashing a cursed chain of events that would lead to me rebuilding and augmenting my childhood Nintendo 64 collection, almost breaking my back hunting down a much nicer (but also free) 27″ Sony Trinitron, and selling my PS5 Digital Edition (for a small profit) to support my crippling addiction, much to my wife’s chagrin.”

Retro gaming is a massive part of the industry. There’s never been a better time to jump into classic gaming libraries, from plug-and-play consoles to authentic hardware recreations.

While the Xbox supports backwards compatibility, the PlayStation 5 lacks support beyond the PS4. If, like in Traxus’ case, you have a Digital PS5, then you’ll have to rely on digital downloads, all of which feels far removed from the retro experience.

Traxus does mention that they’ll likely get a PS5 again in the future. However, for now, they seem to be quite happy with the experience the N64 has to offer:

“I have a couple children now and I feel like of all the retro consoles, the N64 is just fun as hell, especially for young kids with all of the amazing 3d platformers on the system,” they said. “I’ve been playing Super Mario 64 with my boy and it holds up every bit as well as it played in 1996.”
