Player Discovers Zelda Majora’s Mask Secret 20 Years After It Launched

A player has discovered a cool secret in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 20 years after the game had originally launched.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was first released for the N64 back in 2000, yet new secrets are still being discovered. However, this new secret in question was discovered by a programmer who almost quite literally, looked to the stars.

When you start up just about any Legend of Zelda game, the player is asked to enter their name to be used when Link is being addressed. You can choose a new name of your choice or you could stick with using Link. For me personally, I often stick to the default Link name.

It’s written in the stars!

When a name is chosen it would be safe to assume that its purpose is for when being addressed in-game. However, there seems to be much more to your name being chosen than we first thought.

Programmer @zel640, discovered some clever coding that results in the stars in the sky being uniquely generated depending on what the player has chosen as their name. “So last night I discovered that the position of the stars in the sky in Majora’s Mask is randomized based off of… the player’s file name?!,” said @zel640. “Huge thanks to Tharo for helping on this function as well.

It might be easily missed, but in a nutshell, if in one playthrough you chose your own name as the save file, the stars will align in a unique way. However, let’s say that you chose Link as your save name, the stars will align differently. Which is a cool little feature.
