The PlayStation Plus freebie was announced during PlayStation’s State of Play event, along with some significant Final Fantasy 7 Remake updates. The PlayStation 5 is set to get an upgraded version of the RPG, in the form of Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade.

This PS5-optimised experience is set to include enhanced visuals, a photo mode and a whole new chapter starring FF7’s resident ninja, Yuffie.

The PlayStation 5 version of FF7 Remake will also allow players to switch back and forth between “Graphics” and “Performance” modes, which will allow players to choose between fancy visuals and high frame rates, respectively. PS4 players will also be able to migrate their save to the new version of the game and will be eligible for a free upgrade upon its release on June 10th 2021.

Being able to upgrade to FF7 Remake Intergrade for free sounds too good to be true, right? Well, if you’re grabbing the game through PS Plus, then it sort of is. PS Plus players won’t be eligible for the free upgrade, as it requires a bought version of the game. While that could be deemed fair, it could make upgrading to Intergrade a little confusing.

Let’s just say you own a physical copy of FF7 Remake AND redeem it for free on PS Plus, will you still be eligible for the PS5 upgrade? This all depends on how Sony judges eligibility, as the wording they use is slightly convoluted. Here are the terms of use, as cited on a recent PS Plus update tweet:

PlayStation Plus members who redeemed Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4 Version) as a PS Plus benefit are not eligible for a free PS5 upgrade.”

If this rule is taken literally, it essentially means that you can only either redeem a PS Plus copy of FF7 Remake or an upgrade to Intergade upon its release. Either way, it looks like Sony is looking for you to be spending money on FF7 eventually, even if it’s not until July. Perhaps there’s some money to be saved by buying a second-hand copy of Final Fantasy VII Remake while avoiding the PS Plus edition altogether.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is set to release on PS5 on 10th June 2021. The PS4 version of the game is also coming to PS Plus in March, alongside Farpoint, Remnant: From the Ashes, Maquette (PS5 only) and Destruction AllStars.
