When news broke last year that Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin and Soulsbourne devs FromSoftware were collaborating on a new game, the world was dying for more information. Sadly, both parties have since remained pretty quiet on Elden Ring – but that hasn’t stopped a reported leak.
As always with leaks, take everything here with a pinch of salt until we hear from the powers that be.
The (unverified) leak comes from ResetERA, where a known insider who has correctly leaked FromSoftware information in the past, is dropping some knowledge bombs.
Known as Omni, the leaker has revealed some supposed details on Elden Ring’s open world, claiming that FromSoftware is moving away from the traditional style in favour of an “open field” game.
“As someone who generally isn’t into most of the last decades open world titles.. I would say if you’re in the same boat as me you don’t really have anything to worry about in terms of how Fromsoft is designing their ‘open world,’ and it’s the reason they’re pivoting away from even really calling it open-world and moving more towards the distinction of ‘open field,'” says Omni.
They then go on to claim that the studio is looking at different design elements to blend open parts of the game with the more confined spaces of its past games.
Excitingly, it sounds as though the developers are taking a lot of inspiration from the iconic Shadow of the Colossus – news which is sure to please lots of gamers.
Sadly we still don’t know when we can expect a trailer or some gameplay, but with the game reportedly in development for current-gen consoles with no word on next-gen, we might be seeing something sooner rather than later.
