An upcoming PS5 update will finally bring in a feature that fans have been wanting for the console since it launched.
Last week, PlayStation dropped the latest system software update for both the PS5 and PS4. It was a fairly big update, bringing in some big new features. For one, it brought in the open and closed parties feature. Which will make playing with friends online a bit easier. UK and US users can try out a new voice command feature too.
But one of the bigger things teased on the PlayStation blog post is the fact that a future PS5 update will bring in a new feature, variable refresh rate support.
“We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months,” said the blog post.
“On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing.“
The post explains how gameplay in PS5 titles will be smoother as scenes render instantly. As well as crisper graphics, and reduced input lag. Also, developers will be able to patch their games to provide full VRR support, with some games potentially having support at launch.
VRR will also be able to be applied to games that don’t actively support it. Which might improve video quality for some games.
A specific date hasn’t been set for this update. But PlayStation did say it will be arriving in the coming months. So the much requested feature likely isn’t too far off.
