It’s the crossover you didn’t know you needed – a Pokemon album is here to celebrate their 25th birthday.
Can you believe that Pokemon is 25 years old? It seems hard to believe. Over the last 25 years there have been a weird and wonderful range of Pokemon products to show your love for the pocket monsters. From waffle makers to slippers Pokémon have been built into so many fun products. I even found Pokemon sheet masks when I visited Japan, so I could finally (and very briefly) achieve my dream of being as beautiful as an Eevee.
But in its 25th year, as Pokemon reaches a quarter century, a new explosion of Pokémon collabs have been launched. From new games to reprinted trading cards, 2021 has been a Poke-bonanza.
But to cap it all off we’ve got an album. Pokemon 25: The Album launched last week, with tracks from the likes of Katy Perry and Post Malone. I went in pretty sceptical – but actually it’s a really fun album. You can see a cute promo video Katy Perry did with Pikachu here:
What did we think of Pokémon 25: The Album?
There are plenty of Pokemon references – from samples of Pikachu in Ten Cuidado to Jigglypuff’s name being crooned by Lil Yachty in Believing. As reported by TheGamer, several tracks feature cameo performances from Charizard and Loudred.
The Post Malone track has gaming riffs in the background of the intro and outro that sound like old platform tracks. I actually wish he’d leaned more into the gaming licks. The rest of the song is a retro soft rock song, which reminds me of Ronan Keating more than anything else. Reconnect is much weirder and has feels way more connected to the theme and is much more fun as a direct result. Game Girl by French singer Louanne low-key slaps – even the cheesy refrain of ‘game boy game girl’ doesn’t stop me bopping me along. The dreamy euphoria of Wonderful is a particular standout for me – and the ZHU remix adds some fun little retro gaming music twinkles to it.
While none of the tracks are as iconic as Team Rocket’s song or the Pokerap – it’s still great. And how cute is the webpage the Pokémon company made for the album? All the artists look like they have their own cards. Give it a listen on Spotify, Apple or your music streaming service of choice.
