The next Xbox console isn’t due to drop until later this year, but a prototype is already apparently out in the wild, and it could get the owner in a LOT of trouble.
Making the rounds on Twitter right now is the following tweet, which probably isn’t going to be around for too long. The post shows two images of what appears to be an Xbox Series X console bearing the words “Xbox Product Name Placeholder. PROTOTYPE – NOT FOR SALE.”
Along with the wording is a series of serial numbers, and this is where the post gets VERY interesting. According to one Twitter user, they tried to register the serial number to their Microsoft account…and they claim it worked. If this is true, this really is a prototype Xbox console out in the wild. For now.
Of course, it’s not clear where the console has come from, with lots of people speculating it might be a stolen version of the hardware. This theory is down to the fact that the Twitter user didn’t bother to edit out the serial numbers, which means this specific console can be easily traced back to a Microsoft employee.
One user tweeted in response: “Oopsie, serial number is not blocked out… is someone is joining the unemployment line?”
Another user inspected the image closely, asking: “I have so many questions. What is that rectangular slit? Is that for Devs to hook it up or something? And what is the rectangular oval angled thing on top? Too small for a handle, unless it’s also a dev thing to pop open the back or something?”
The Twitter user who shared the images seems to simply have an Xbox fan account, filled with retweets on the upcoming console.
At the time of writing, Microsoft and Xbox have not commented on the leak. As always, we take this leak with a pinch of salt for now until we hear otherwise!
