Final Fantasy is known for featuring some unexpected adult themes. From potty-mouthed Kupos to raunchy gags and humour, the series is far more mature than most realise. However, according to Square Enix’s Motomu Toriyama, the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake almost had a pole dancing scene!
Revealed via an interview on the Square Enix website, the risqué scene apparently took place at the game’s Honeybee Inn. Of course, this is the same part of the game that features Cloud tactically crossdressing in order to infiltrate Don Corneo’s lair.
What is the Honeybee Inn?
If you’re familiar with Final Fantasy VII, then the fact this inn almost had pole dancing won’t come as a surprise. While the remake’s version of the Honeybee Inn is vastly more appropriate than the original, the club still features burlesque dancers and adult-themed entertainment. However, the pole dancing scene was inevitably cut to protect the game’s eventual age rating:
“Initially, for example, there was a pole dancing scene included, which meant that filming began on an elaborate set. We decided to take that part out due to the impact on the rating!”
While Cloud’s pole dancing extravaganza never made it to the final game, the interview makes a point of highlighting the importance of the Honeybee Inn segment. In the remake, the iconic scenario was upgraded from being an optional quest to part of the main game. As a result, the quest has become a staple part of the Final Fantasy VII experience and features a pretty remarkable rhythm-based mini-game.
Who knows, perhaps one day we’ll get to see Cloud strut his stuff on a nightclub pole. While fans will no doubt be disappointed about the chopped scene, the remake’s version of the Honeybee Inn incorporates a message of inclusion and queer representation. Hopefully, this is something that is weaved into future Final Fantasy games and part 2 of the remake!
