If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that PlayStation has been slowly venturing into the realm of PC gaming. However, thanks to Sony’s most recent studio acquisition, more PC ports could be on the horizon.
That’s right, Sony has revealed that Nixxes, a Netherlands based studio known for its work on PC ports like Marvel’s Avengers, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and the Tomb Raider, will be joining PlayStation Studios:
“Excited to announce that the talented Dutch studio Nixxes Software will be joining PlayStation Studios. It’s a real pleasure to welcome a team with such deep technical expertise and vast experience to the @Playstation family. Huge congrats to everyone @NixxesSoftware!”
What are Sony’s plans for Nixxes?
According to PlayStation’s Hermen Hulst, Nixxes has a “passion for improving games and for delivering the best possible experience for gamers”. While at face value this appears to be a simple introductory compliment, it could also be a reference to the studio’s abilities when it comes to enhancing console games for the PC platform. If this is the case, we could see more PlayStation PC ports with improved graphics, performance and features. Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn have done well on PC and it makes sense that Sony is looking to do more ports.
Sony hasn’t disclosed how much it actually paid for Nixxes. However, the company does appear to be on a studio spending spree. Earlier this week, Sony announced that Housemarque would be the latest studio to join the PlayStation family. While Sony arguably already has a robust first-party line-up, it looks like the company is trying to reinforce its efforts in response to Xbox Game Studios ever-expanding collection of acquisitions.
Who knows, perhaps PlayStation’s plans for PC gaming are more ambitious than you’d think. While having Nixxies on board will help get more PlayStation games onto PC storefronts, perhaps Sony is developing a strategy to take on the likes of Xbox Game Pass for PC? Maybe we’ll even see Nixxies developing original titles? No matter what it is they get up to it’s an intriguing accquisition from Sony.
