Sony has just confirmed that – yes – the fifth PlayStation console is in the works.
In an interview with the Financial Times [via Eurogamer], Sony boss Kenichiro Yoshida confirmed: “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.”
Although details are – naturally – very thin on the ground right now, the interview goes on to state that “early indications were that it might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar,” – at least according to the Financial Times’ sources…
It’s not yet been confirmed whether the new console is going to be called the PlayStation 5, it’s a pretty smart bet that Sony won’t stray from its roots.
There’s been rumblings of a PS5 in the works for a while now, and back at E3 2018 Xbox’s Phil Spencer confirmed that yes, Microsoft had already begun work on its next-gen consoles, and yes, there was going to be multiple.
Xbox has also confirmed a streaming-only console, an interesting idea that Google seems to have taken and run with, as it recently announced a move into streaming games to your browser.
PlayStation and Xbox both caused controversy in the gaming community when they released the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X – mid-gen consoles that provided a little more power than their original forms, but seemingly not enough for every gamer to fork out for…
Speaking of mid-gen consoles, Nintendo is rumoured to be working on a Switch 2.0 console, in the similar vein of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
The second iteration of the Switch is expected to include a better screen, though nothing else has really been revealed on the subject.
