Niantic is shutting down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite after only two years, fully closing down on January 31, 2022.
Niantic announced the news that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is shutting down through the game’s official Twitter, sharing a post with more specific details. The augmented reality game will no longer be available to download from December 6. Players will also be unable to make in-app purchases from the same date. After January 31 next year the game will be completely unplayable.
There are still events planned for the game throughout November and December, as well as apparently some “game changes” in January. There are also XP boosts planned to make the game a bit easier for its remaining time live.
If players have spent any money in the app, they won’t be able to receive a refund. “Players will not be able to receive a refund on past purchases, except where otherwise required by law. You will be able to spend your remaining Gold balance and items before the game closes on January 31, 2022.” reads the post.
VentureBeat pointed out that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite only generated roughly $40 million in revenue lifetime. In comparison, Pokémon Go has made $1.1 billion in 2021 alone. That’s a huge difference, one that Niantic are likely disappointed by. While $40 million isn’t a small number, it’s not what the company is after. Pikmin Bloom will now be their next focus, though whether that can match Pokémon Go’s revenue remains to be seen.
