Twitter is banning users from linking to other social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram as well as other rival platforms.
As reported by Sky News, users may find their accounts suspended if their page has links to other social media platforms considered to be a rival to Twitter, which is now owned by Elon Musk.
Twitter enforces the ban hammer on Facebook and Instagram!
In a tweet posted on Sunday, December 18th, the Twitter Support page said: “We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter.”
It continued: “Specifically, we will remove accounts created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms and content that contains links or usernames”.
Which social media accounts are blacklisted?
Twitter Support revealed that seven rival social media accounts will be blacklisted from users being able to link accounts. Those accounts include Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post.
However, that is not all, because Linktree has also been banned. This one in particular is a blow because this third-party social website is a great tool to advertise various bodies of work in one place.
Moreover, Twitter Support said it will still allow users to “cross-post content from any social media platform”. So, we’re guessing that Facebook and Instagram links in a Twitter bio are a no-go, but actual tweets will be fine.
What social media accounts are safe?
Social media accounts not listed above such as TikTok, LinkedIn, and Parler are still permitted. We assume that considering YouTube isn’t listed by Twitter Support, the social media platform is safe too.
What’s more, the tweet by Twitter Support announcing bans of other social media links has now been deleted. Make of that what you will. Hopefully, Twitter has realised that banning links to other accounts, especially when it can impact businesses is not a good look.
